Ok, after taking 3 months off, I've got some tight shit to share with all y'all. Most of my CDs are in the wrong case and that, so it's going to take a minute to get that shit sorted out. But in the meantime, here is a CD that was actually in it's proper case.

This is the best album art I could find, seeing as how my webcam doesn't want to work for me any more. Might be able to get the little fucker working again once I hook up my own computer... But I'm a pretty lazy dude, so I most likely won't be doing that for while.

Out of Oakland, The Luniz have been a successful and influential rap duo since 1995. Yukmouth and Numskull met back in junior high in their hometown Oakland, Cali. Yukmouth was a part of a group of young MCs called Brothaz Wit Potential. Using Numskull's artistic talent, the group used his skill to create their logo. Soon after, Num found an interest in rapping and with his natural talent, became a member of the group. Yuk at the time was slangin' crack, and served a 1 year sentence in a juvenile facility. This is where he came up with the concept and plotted out what was soon to be The Luniz. After hooking up with local drug dealer Chris Hicks, who had ties with Too $hort and The Dangerous Crew, C&H(Hicks) introduced them to his cousin Dru Down. After the other members of their first group, Brothaz Wit Potential, dropped out, Yuk and Num formed The Luniz.

In 1992, after hooking up with Dru Down, they appeared on several tracks on his Explicit Game CD. Soon after, Noo Trybe records, a division of Virgin, signed the group. Getting noticed internationally after dropping their single, "I Got 5 On It", which ended up going platinum. Their debut album, Operation Stackola, respectively also went platinum. Problems with their label ended up leaving Yuk and Num broke and doing what they were trying to free themselves of, slangin' rocks. Being a part of a lengthy tour with Notorious B.I.G, Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Junior Mafia and Naughty By Nature which they eventually were kicked off of for all the wrong reasons according to Yukmouth. Apparently, several rappers put the blame on the duo for shit that they didn't even do.

Apart from their minor differences at the time, The Luniz hit the studio again to record their follow up, Lunitik Muzik. After that, Yukmouth got an offer to sign with Rap-A-Lot records for a solo release. From there on out, The Luniz were rarely seen together in public which seemed like the group was done for good. Luckily their wives got them talking to each other again and they realized they would have to hook up because their solo efforts weren't going anywhere. After convincing Num that going to Rap-A-Lot was the only way they could do an album, he agreed to the contract, mostly for financial reasons. However, the group didn't feel that chemistry that was apparent on Operation Stackola on their newest release, Silver & Black. Somehow the CD was bootlegged to a point where you could get it for $2 just about anywhere in Oakland. This pretty much finished the idea of The Luniz returning and hindered the groups potential. After minor legal disputes to put the album out sooner rather than later between C&H and Rap-A-Lot records, Silver & Black was released on August 13th, 2002, with only 2 songs that weren't on the bootlegged version.

Is there a possibility that we may see any The Luniz in the near future? Maybe. Here is what Numskull had to say about the matter, "Me and Yuk, we got the gift to do what we need to do. We work well together. He compliments me, I compliment him. we have our problems but the day we did 5 On It, we wasn't even fuckin with each other. We were fightin' that day and we made a hit. That's the way we create. Me and Yuk don't like each other when we get into the studio but we make fuckin' heat. It's a fucked up way to make music. Really, I knew Rap-A-Lot wasn't gonna put no nothin' into this album. So I looked at Silver & Black as a street warmer to let everybody know this is the type of shit we can come with still. And then me and Yuk do an album together and call it my solo album because Yuk can't go nowhere as The Luniz. We got ways around shit, we got ways around Rap-A-Lot, we got ways around C&H, we got ways around everybody".

So are The Luniz done? Fuck no. I think once these cats get a break from all these issues they have, be it one thing or another, they will show us what they are really capable of as they did on Operation Stackola.

In the world of rap today, we don't see many MCs straying from the pack and trying to come with something new. Many artists feel the need to follow a strict guideline that they believe will help promote record sales and popularity. This pursuit of fame and riches has lead hip hop into the state it is in today.

The year was 1993 and hip hop was getting more popular than ever before. As dirt poor as they come, Bone Thugs auditioned for Eazy-E over the phone to no avail. After being turned down once, the group had been handed a second chance and convinced Eazy to listen to them back stage at one of his shows. With a one of a kind style, BTH managed to captivate audiences and sold over 2 million copies of their debut LP, Creepin' On Ah Come Up in 1994. The rest is history.

Layzie's brother, Flesh-N-Bone, made minor appearances on their first 2 albums because he didn't sign with the Ruthless record label. Using the groups success, he was given an opportunity to release his debut solo album, "T.H.U.G.S.". Although receiving poor album reviews and selling less records than anticipated, Flesh shows us more of a spiritual side than any of the other Bone Thugs at the time. Without the exceptional production of Dj-Uneek, this album displays an individual sound that had not been witnessed from the Bone Thugs in the past. Treading the line of being spiritual all the way to being a murderous felon is somewhat questionable. However, with his diverse talent and flow, that minor detail can be easily overlooked. With various producers, mainly Damon Elliot, you can expect a broad array of songs, from jazzy hooks to g-funk style base lines.

Also, I highly recommend checking out his second compilation album, From Cleveland To Cali. On this record he features some very talented unknown MCs and incorporates more of a west coast feel. But somewhere along the line, Flesh fell off(see: 5th Dog Let Loose). This may have been due to his ongoing trouble with the law. Weeks before his latest album, 5th Dogg Let Loose, was released, Flesh-N-Bone was sentenced to an 11 year prison sentence for threatening a friend with an Ak-47. Flesh is scheduled to be released on parole some time in 2008.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about The Wu-Tang Clan? For me, it's their creativity and rap style that is best described as one of a kind. The Wu is known for being associated with a broad plethora of affiliated artists. Giving them a steady platform for a head start in the recording industry. These affiliates, also known as Wu-Fam, have been given a chance to broadcast their talent with the support of the infamous W. Wu-Tang, as a collective, have given a fighting chance to those artists who may not have been given such an opportunity under different circumstances. The Wu-Tang stamp alone helps promote albums and significantly increase record sales.

As rarely seen before, Cannibal Ox maintains the originality and intellectual lyrics that set Wu-Tang apart from the rest. Comprising of Vast Aire and Vordul Megilah(aka Vordul Mega). With both MCs capable of holding their own on the mic, each artist is able to contribute their own unique style and at the same time manage to maintain a certain balance. Fresh, insightful and somewhat violent storytelling and top notch production generate, to say the least, a refreshing and imaginative album in it's entirety. Although Cold Vein being their debut LP, Cannibal Ox has been stirring up the NYC underground with fellow crew members The Atoms Family since 1995. Teaming up with Company Flow's El-Producto(El-P), who laces track after track with his sometimes unorthodox production talent. With beats often sounding almost futuristic in a sense, Cold Vein is a refreshing burst of creativity which seems to be lacking in today's hip hop scene.

With clever play-on-words, Vast Aire proves his lyrical talent without a doubt. While Vordul Mega shows us an intricate and in detail view of NY's inner city life. With one of the most innovative and respected producers at a climax of skills and creativity, Cold Vein proves to be one of the few classics in the new millennium. The slow tempo beats compliment the grimey and dark storytelling to a point where you would think these guys have been working together for years.

After the rumors of Can Ox breaking up were cleared up by Vordul Mega, he announced the group has no intentions of splitting. We will be seeing the duo, along with El-P on the production end, releasing a new album most likely some time in 2007. Guest producers are said to include The Rza and Pete Rock respectively.

I've been ripping CDs for only a couple weeks now and am clueless as to how you get the track info included on the mp3s that I rip from CD. I'm using Windows Media Player to rip the CDs. I think maybe 2 of the 30 I've done so far have included the track information, which is pretty rough considering some of them are relatively newer CDs. I know that personally I hate when I'm trying to listen to a CD and I want to know what the track name is or who is featured and I have to consult the internet to find out.

So please, if anyone has any suggestions or comments, this is the time to leave them. As I'm sure it will making your listening experience more enjoyable.

On a side note, I'm ridiculously horrible at making banners as I've found out in the last few days when trying to make a logo for this blog. If anyone is up to the task, and wants to do me a HUGE favor, I'm sure anybody else's logo attempt would be leaps and bounds better than what I can do. Just remember, stick to the color scheme and I'm not encouraging anyone to do anything too fancy, so keep that in mind. Also, I'd rather it didn't include any rappers faces or whatnot.. Like I say, nothing fancy.

Also this would be a good time for anyone to give any constructive criticism regarding the blog so I can get a rough idea what direction I want to take My Side Of The Tracks. I would really like to get some feedback seeing how I'm new to this and am willing to take all the help I can get.

Released independently on Uncle Howie Records, The Green Cd is a solid CD with a bonus 2 hour DVD. Being one of the only artists that I've been feeling in the new millennium. Non Phixion has been around since 1995 performing with many great NY acts. After releasing all sorts of singles, that sold over 100 000 copies, they released The Future Is Now and shortly after with unreleased material and freestyles, they came out with The Green CD/DVD. Non Phixion is made up of Sabac Red, Goretex, Ill Bill and Dj Eclipse. Although I'm not that big on Necro, these guys have given me hope that hip hop will emerge from it's state of commercialism back into the creative work of art that I love it for.

For a long time, I was really into Onyx, especially records like Bacdafucup, All We Got Iz Us and Shut 'Em Down. Seeing as Sticky Finger is my personal favorite MC out of the Onyx line up, I decided to put up his record Black Trash. Telling a very detailed and vivid story, Sticky tells the story of a fictionalized Kirk Jones. With clever skits in between songs, the whole album keeps true to the same concept from front to back. The song "Why" is one of my favorite hip hop tracks of all time.

Back in the early 90s, many people felt what the camp members were doing and were in a so called "military state of mind". With success releasing Black Moon's Enta Da Stage and Smif N Wessun's Dah Shinin', BCC got increasingly more popular to a point where Brooklyn was nicknamed Bucktown. I've decided to include the groups first collaborative effort although it did not get much commercial success. From West Oakland, The Whoridas took a different approach with a unique style unlike that of typical west coast sound at the time. Mr. Taylor and King Hasaan, family members of Saafir, originally appeared in the Hobo Junction crew. After earning recognition amongst the underground rap scene, they were picked up by South Paw Records, a division of Delicious Vinyl. This is some fresh west coast hip hop with catchy lyrics and funky beats. To this day, I still find myself reciting lyrics from the Whoridin' album... Pounds, ki's and oz's, rakin' in dough like leaves off fallin' trees.

Shortly after Low Profile(Dj Aladdin/WC) disbanded, WC, with help from his younger brother Crazy Toones, Coolio and Big Gee, created WC & The Maad Circle. Former label-mates with Ice Cube, Dub C released his first album with The Maad Circle in 1991 titled "Ain't A Damn Thang Changed". During a brief Hiatus from the recording industry, the Dubya assisted Ice Cube in coaching Coolio to be a solo artist. In 1995, WC & The Maad Circle reappeared with "Curb Servin" on Payday Records. As a result of the song "West Up", Cube, One-O and the Dubya decided to team up for an entire album.

Mr. Mike is without a doubt one of the better MCs to come out of Texas. Hailing from Houston, Mike is the prominent member of the South Circle Click, not to be mistaken with South Central Cartel(SCC). Originally label mates with 8-Ball and MJG on Suave House Records. Releasing his first album, Anotha Day Anotha Balla in '95 with group member Thorough. The following year he came out with his 1st and only solo album to date, Wicked Wayz. Among his obvious rapping talents, he also possesses the ability to sing as displayed on some of the hooks. Mr. Mike highlights gangsta rap at it's finest.

I just thought I'd mention that Mr. Mike is going to be involved with a new and upcoming latino rapper named Rude. I have yet to hear any news of a possible release date, but I'll be keeping my eyes open.

Da Lench Mob: A street political group that addresses the sweat, blood, tears, pain, anger and injustice for the African born in America.

First gracing listeners with their explicit and political viewpoints on Ice Cube's Amerikkka's Most wanted. Da Lench Mob, consisting of members J-Dee, T-Bone and Shorty, released their first album Guerillas In Tha mist in 1992 under the guidance of Ice Cube. Disappointingly, J-Dee was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison a year later. Instead of calling it quits, the group continued in it's quest and picked up an Oakland based rapper named Maulkie. With Cube as executive producer and their newest addition to the group, Maulkie, the trio followed up with their sophomore effort, Planet Of Da Apes in '94.

This combined effort from respected west coast pioneers Spice 1 and Celly Cel was really quite a landmark. Bringing together 2(three) of the biggest west coast MCs to collaborate efforts was an accomplish- ment in itself and a huge step forward in the West Coast hip hop game. Although Criminalz started out with a third member, Jayo Felony, for some reason he dropped out last minute and was only featured on 7 out of 12 tracks. For whatever reasons he didn't appear on the cover.

Most successful rap groups often had guidance while making their best albums. Or a so-to-speak, mastermind, to help mold the three into one common sound. Some could say that this reminds them more of a collaboration project rather than an actual "group".

As gangsta as it gets, Mc Eiht's "We Come Strapped", caused much controversy when first released in 1994. Epic records took another pre- cautionary action by not only labeling the album with the commonly seen sticker, "Parental Advisory Explicit Lyrics", but also by using a second sticker that reads, "The Lyrical Content Contained On This Album Solely Expresses The Views Of The Artist". What compelled Epic to take such an action was Eiht's track entitled "Take 2 With Me" with references to Los Angeles police chief Willie Williams, "Heard them whisper, 'Chief Williams, 2 officers down.'" According to inside sources at Epic records, the company felt that the R.I.A.A. parental advisory sticker did not cover some of the issues Eiht touched. To Eiht, this was a big achievement and in a way like winning an award for most controversial rapper.

Ever since I was introduced to hip hop I've developed a taste for west coast rappers. And for me, one of the biggest influences that lead me in that direction was Spice 1. With albums like Amerikkka's Nightmare, 187 He Wrote and The Black Bossalini there is no wonder why he is so highly regarded by many west coast enthusiasts. Also possessing a unique style of quick rhyming and even sometimes reggae sounding lyrics. Spice 1 has played a major role in what west coast rap is today and still to this day is producing solid releases.

Originally known as the Crime Syndicate. Started by members Joe Mafia, Myalansky and Napolean. They changed their name to Wu- Syndicate to link them to Wu-Tang Records. In 2002, Joe Mafia released a solo album called "This One".

There is word that they will be releasing a new Syndicate album after they both finish doing jail time.

Graveyard Soldjas established themselves early on in the southern rap scene. After their poorly distributed albums "Day of Execution" and "Cut Throat City" were released, they were voted by Rap Pages as one of the top 5 acts in Louisiana.

Cash Money's Juvenile lent a helping hand by producing several tracks and appearing on their next album, "3 Time Losers".

After working with a multi-platinum artist they wanted to represent New Orleans to the fullest. GYS hopes their efforts will help bridge the sound in the "big easy".

After hearing the Doc for the first time on Brotha Lynch's Season of Siccness album, I knew he had talent. Little did I know that I would be blown away by the overall sound and delivery of Setripn' Bloccstyle. However, some of his later release would not live up to this masterpiece debut.

Even though this may never get the recognition it deserves, it still holds it's own as a mid 90s, west coast classic.
